Stack Emissions Compliance Monitoring

Protea carries out mainly instrumental based compliance monitoring to methods within the MCERTS scheme.

In the case of emissions monitoring the techniques used are:

  Analytes Method
High resolution FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra red) Most organic and inorganic components ASTM D6348-03
FID (Flame ionisation detector) Total VOC BS EN 13526:2001
BS EN 12619:1999
Mass Spectrometer Halogens, hydrogen, air components, H2S In-house method
Pitot flowmeter, other meters Flowrate via velocity, temperature, pressure BS EN 13284-1:2002
Thermal mass flowmeter Continuous logged flow In-house method
(UKAS traceable)
'Particulates' sampling train Particulates (0 - 50 mg/m3)
Particulates (20 - 1000 mg/m3)
Moisture (29 - 250 g/m3)
BS EN 13284-1:2002
BS ISO 9096:2003
BS EN 14790:2005

The most versatile analyser is the FTIR, which is suitable for continuous profiling of most target analytes including combustion gases, organics such as formaldehyde and phenol and inorganics such as ammonia.

Uncertainty using FTIR and the ASTM method for specified analytes can be as low as +/-5% for typical mixtures.
